CARE Canada was established in 1946 as part of an international network bringing emergency relief to the people of Europe. CARE's commitment to humanitarian assistance continues to this day, and is complimented by a broad range of long term development programmes in water and community health, agroforestry and conservation, and small enterprise and income generation.
Eighty thousand individual, corporate, foundation, community group, and service club donors across Canada support CARE's work.
CARE works with communities in need to improve living conditions. CARE is also there in the aftermath of disaster or social conflict, providing urgently needed food, water, and shelter. Once the immediate crisis is over, CARE works with communities to re-establish stability.
In all its activities CARE has developed an exemplary reputation for community-based programmes built on community participation and solid research and design an ability to respond quickly to marshal resources, equipment, and personnel a skilled workforce with knowledge and experience of the special circumstances that prevail in states emerging from social and ethnic conflict a proven managerial capacity to handle large and complex international projects.

Working in close collaboration with the Canadian government and United Nations agencies, and other members of CARE International, CARE Canada is well positioned to provide swift and effective emergency assistance and meet long term development needs.
CARE Canada is an operational member of the CARE International network, supporting and implementing development projects and relief efforts around the world. We are also the lead CARE member responsible for coordinating the overall efforts of the CARE International network in Cameroon, Colombia, Cuba, East Timor, Indonesia, Jamaica, Kenya, the Russian Federation (Ingushetia and Chechnya), Zambia and Zimbabwe. CARE Canada operates projects in a total of 48 countries.
